This is a little project I created purely for myself.  I replaced the ashtray in my '99 BMW with a custom-fit piece that I built in Autodesk Alias.  It is a molded iPod holder, and provides a great solution for all the clutter that most people deal with when using an iPod/iPhone for music in a car.  You simply drop the iPod in and go.

This project also gave me a good intro to the world of 3D printing/rapid prototyping.  I am learned to create watertight models and how to adjust tolerances.

Finished part fresh out of the 3D printer (FDM material).

In the car, where the ashtray used to sit.  It's right behind the gear shifter.

Diagram showing how to release the iPod:  You just squeeze the sides and it pops up.
