This is a little project I created purely for myself. I replaced the ashtray in my '99 BMW with a custom-fit piece that I built in Autodesk Alias. It is a molded iPod holder, and provides a great solution for all the clutter that most people deal with when using an iPod/iPhone for music in a car. You simply drop the iPod in and go.
This project also gave me a good intro to the world of 3D printing/rapid prototyping. I am learned to create watertight models and how to adjust tolerances.

Finished part fresh out of the 3D printer (FDM material). |

In the car, where the ashtray used to sit. It's right behind the gear shifter. |

Diagram showing how to release the iPod: You just squeeze the sides and it pops up. |
